This report highlights that even as more men join the workforce, Canadian women continue to retreat from it due to COVID-19, risking an erosion of skills. This may in turn exacerbate the gender wage gap. According to the report, more than 20,000 women fell out of the labour force between February and October 2020), mostly because more of their jobs are in the hardest-hit industries and are less conducive to working remotely. In comparison, nearly 68,000 men joined the labour force over the same period. The report reveals that women in two key cohorts (20–24 and 35–39) are exiting the labour force faster, with the younger cohort choosing to return to school and the older one opting to look after their children.
