This research explores the impact of COVID-19 on youth in host and refugee communities in Turkey. Using qualitative and quantitative data collected from 15 May to 10 August 2020, the report focuses on youth “not in employment, education or training (NEET).The report argues that a high rate of youth with NEET status cannot be categorized only as a financial problem. The psychological and sociological implications extend not only to youth but also to the entire society. Additionally, the report highlights how COVID-19 has exacerbated an economic crisis that will negatively impact refugees and women for years to come. To address these issues, the report recommends recognizing free, quality education as a human right, monitoring school attendance to decrease drop-out rates, implementing an education-first approach and enabling comprehensive programs such as Youth Guarantees that are needed to reengage NEET youth in employment.
