Future of work
A curated resource of recent research on trends shaping Canada's labour market.
Work in many sectors, including clean energy, will be influenced by advances in technology. One rapidly expanding market in clean energy production is that of hydrogen, which is an attractive fuel option because it produces only water when burned. Hydrogen is also used in the production of other key markets, like the fertilizer and chemical industry.
Hydrogen is produced easily in Alberta because the province is home to both vast reserves of natural gas and a wealth of knowledge. Expertise—from researchers, government, Indigenous partners, and industrial partners—is key to effectively leveraging and growing this emerging part of the economy.
To optimize output from Alberta’s cluster of expertise, the University of Alberta has launched the Centre for Hydrogen Innovation, Workforce Development and Outreach. The centre will offer training opportunities and co-op placements. It will also educate the public about hydrogen’s potential as a source of clean energy.
Given the expected growth of hydrogen as an energy source in Canada and around the world, this initiative aims to both transform technology and develop the workforce required to support it.
