A curated resource of recent research on trends shaping Canada's labour market.
Using data from Statistics Canada, the author estimates that only 22% of employment is at high risk from automation. Past research overestimates job loss risk due to automation at 42%. The agriculture, natural resources, utilities and manufacturing sectors are at high risk of automation as compared to health, law, education and government services. The research highlights the fact that underrepresented demographic groups, such as Black and Indigenous workers, are more susceptible to these job losses through automation as compared to men, women, and immigrants. The analysis also recommends investment in job-training and income support for the unemployed and low-income earners facing coverage gaps in employment insurance due to job loss from automation.
