Key Takeaway
Inclusive practices are critical to preparing job postings that will be effective for integrating immigrants and marginalized groups into the Canadian labour market.

This Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) study highlights Canada’s plan to welcome 1.5 million new permanent residents from 2024 to 2026, focusing on their integration into the labour force and the need for fair hiring practices.

For example, after reviewing 578 job postings from various organizations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), TRIEC identified challenges that could be addressed by changing how jobs are advertised. One such challenge is the relegation of skilled immigrants to low-skill jobs, which significantly affects immigrant women.

The report notes that biases in job postings, such as mentions of Canadian credentials and networks, may discourage immigrants from applying. To address this, TRIEC recommends that job postings use inclusive language, indicate how managers will assess international credentials, and highlight the organization’s intent to promote transparency throughout the hiring process

The findings in this report underscore the need for better job posting practices to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in Toronto’s job market. Making the recommended changes will enhance opportunities for immigrants and marginalized groups seeking work in the GTA, and may well inspire change elsewhere.
