This report answers three central questions about innovation intermediaries with the goal of better understanding how they operate to support innovation. First, it defines innovation intermediaries as organizations that provide a supportive role for collaboration between parties during the various stages of innovation. Next, it explains the need for innovation intermediaries to support firms, individuals or universities in overcoming systemic or market-based barriers to innovation. Finally, it discusses how successful innovation intermediaries act to create, maintain and strengthen connections amongst those in an innovation system. As well, intermediaries can provide access to testing facilities, financing, portfolio advice or technology transfer opportunities. They can also support the exploitation of new knowledge to generate positive socio-economic impacts.
