LMIC and CCDF announce joint 2026 research partnership on labour market information use in career development

Ottawa, ON | January 26, 2025 — The Labour Market Information Council (LMIC) and the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF) today announced a joint research partnership to examine how career development practitioners across Canada access and use labour market information (LMI), and how those needs have evolved over the past five years in the context of a changing labour market.

The partnership will support a national research initiative taking place in 2026 and reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the evidence base on how LMI is used in practice within the career development field.

Career development practitioners play a critical role in helping people navigate education, training, and employment decisions. At the same time, Canada’s labour market information ecosystem has grown more complex, and persistent gaps remain in how LMI is accessed, interpreted, and applied in day-to-day practice. This partnership aims to better understand those realities from a practitioner perspective.

Career development practitioners play a key role in how people navigate job transitions, training decisions, and workforce participation. As Canada continues to navigate tight labour markets, skills shortages, and ongoing workforce transitions, understanding how labour market information is used in practice is directly linked to how effectively individuals connect to education, training, and employment opportunities.

“Career development practitioners are on the front lines of helping people make informed decisions about work and learning,” said Rebecca Webb, Executive Director at LMIC. “This partnership with CCDF will help generate practitioner-informed evidence on how labour market information is actually used today, and where gaps continue to affect decision-making.”

The 2026 project will focus on documenting current practitioner experiences with LMI, including the tools they rely on, the barriers they face, and the information gaps that continue to affect their ability to support clients effectively. Findings will be shared through co-branded insight products designed to be accessible and relevant to the career development community.

“CCDF is pleased to collaborate with LMIC on this important work,” said Sareena Hopkins, CEO at CCDF. “By grounding this research in practitioner experience, the project will help ensure that discussions about labour market information reflect the realities of those who use it every day to support Canadians.”

Under the partnership, LMIC will lead the research design, data collection, analysis, and development of co-branded insight products. CCDF will contribute sector expertise and support engagement with its national network of career development practitioners.

The partnership will be formally announced during Cannexus, Canada’s largest bilingual career development conference, where both organizations will be in attendance.

Work under the partnership will begin and conclude in 2026.
